About the Book
At first, George Orwell’s Animal Farm may seem like a fancy yet simple story where Old Major instigates two pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, to revolt against the farmer who owns them. But, the story isn’t as simple as it seems. In Animal Farm, Orwell has taken a few events from Russian history - the Russian Revolution and Stalin’s rise to power - and has tried to mock them. In fact, in one of his letters to the French translator Yvonne Davet, Orwell referred to Animal Farm as a tale written to ridicule Stalin. A democratic socialist, Orwell was always a critic of Stalin and he strongly opposed the idea of dictatorship, and that’s what this book is all about.
About the Author
An outspoken supporter of democratic socialism and an ardent opposer of totalitarianism - these are the traits that describe English novelist Eric Arthur Blair, famously known as George Orwell, the best. In fact, Orwell’s awareness of social injustice and his lucid prose made his literary works something that every reader should consider reading at some point in his/her lifetime. Although Orwell died at a relatively young age of 46, his works - Animal Farm, 1984, Homage to Catalonia, and Down and Out in Paris and London - still continue to make readers wish that there was more to read from him.
